Fostering Community Engagement: University Outreach Program at Dona Nicasia J. Puyat Elementary School

At Dona Nicasia J. Puyat Elementary School, something exciting happened recently! Students from the University of Baguio’s School of Information Technology, School of Business Administration and Accountancy , School of Criminal Justice and Public Safety , School of Dentistry , School of Engineering and Architecture , School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management , School of Natural Sciences , School of Nursing , UB Elementary Faculty and all the candidates for Mr. and Ms. University of Baguio 2024 came over to hang out with the kindergarten students of Dona Nicasia J. Puyat Elementary School.

The day kicked off with storytelling; candidates brought along colorful storybooks and shared fun interactive stories with the children. The magic began to happen when kids became active participants and listeners in the stories. It was like going on adventures without leaving school!

But that’s not all! The candidates also played some cool games with the kids. Children eagerly gathered for the games as these were not your usual video games or fancy toys. They played traditional games that resonate with the nostalgia of generations past, games that were once cherished by the parents and grandparents of the current generation. Everyone had a blast running around and having fun together.

The School of Dentistry and School of Nursing also taught the kids on the proper way of brushing their teeth and washing their hands. The candidate of the School of Nursing demonstrated the proper handwashing technique while singing the “Happy Birthday” song. The kids excitedly went along with it, following the hand movements of the candidates as they rubbed their palms, backs of hands, fingers, and under their nails. After the handwashing demonstration, the School of Dentistry tackled the topic of dental hygiene. They demonstrated the right way to brush our teeth: in circular motions on the front, back, and chewing teeth. After the demonstrations, the university students also gave the kids hygiene kits! These are kits containing essential hygiene items such as soap, toothpaste, toothbrushes, and other personal care items for good hygiene.

Now, here’s the best part: there was yummy food too! The health and wellbeing of kindergarten students lies in a well-planned feeding program. Students from the School of International Hospitality and Tourism Management, the University of Baguio Elementary Faculty and the School of Information Technology worked hard to prepare delicious meals for everyone. They offered a fulfilling meal that the kids would definitely love. No one left with an empty stomach!

This day wasn’t just about having fun, though. It was also about helping out. Combining games, storytelling, and feeding programs creates an embracing approach to entertaining and teaching the kindergartners. The University of Baguio students showed that they care about their community. By spending time with the kids, playing games, and sharing meals, they made everyone feel happy and loved.
